There are journeys, and then there are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that few have experienced and many will not believe. This itinerary is one of them, and its length makes it an excellent addition to any of our other East Africa itineraries or your own customized journey.
Arrive in Kigali, and after a tour of the Genocide Museum, your guide will drive you to the beautiful Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge near the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park. Enjoy stunning views of the Virunga Volcanoes while preparing for the exciting days ahead.
Spend your first day trekking among the gorillas of Volcanoes National Park with an expert guide and tracker. The group you visit will be determined based on your fitness level and the location of the various groups in the park the previous evening. Very few travelers are lucky enough to be able to visit gorillas in their natural habitat, and the photographic opportunities available on this journey will astound you.
The next day, you can choose from participating in a second trek to visit another group of gorillas, a trek to Karisoke to visit the graves of Dian Fossey and Digit, or a golden monkey trek. The golden monkey trek is a relatively new opportunity that has only been available since 2003 and is a fascinating experience. After your day’s activities, you will head back to Kigali and overnight at the Kigali Serena before your departing flight.
Consider adding this itinerary to a custom safari in Tanzania and Kenya, or combine it with our Pearl of Africa itinerary in Uganda to continue learning about gorillas and the other amazing primate species that inhabit this region of Africa.
Please note: Children under age 15 are not permitted to go on the gorilla trek.
