Arrive in Luang Prabang for a fascinating glimpse into the Buddhist religious practice and traditional lifestyle of hill-tribe groups in the northern region of Laos. Just outside of Old Town Luang Prabang, the splendid Hotel de la Paix matches the mystique and bygone grace of the World Heritage-recognized city. Lush gardens and an authentic atmosphere of peace designed by renowned architect Duangrit Bunnag welcome you to a retreat within the city. If time permits, take time to relax with a traditional Lao massage by one of the hotel’s expert therapists at Spa Indochine and a romantic candlelit dinner at one of the property's lauded restaurants.
Begin exploring this charming town and its beautiful sights by vintage car. Your UNESCO-expert guide will take you to illustrious landmarks such as the National Museum, the Royal Palace, Heritage House, and stunning wats such as Wat Mai, Wat Xieng Mouane, and Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang's most magnificent temple. Continue your drive to Ock Pop Tok, a Lao weaving center, for traditional Lao food and a natural silk dying workshop. Conclude the day with a sundowner coffee cupping session with David Dale from Saffron Coffee and a Lao fusion dinner at the local favorite, Mango Tree.
Next, travel like locals by tuk-tuk to the peninsula to witness and attend an alms giving ceremony, where long lines of monks and novices stroll along the street of the town center to collect their daily food subsistence from the worshipers. You will then embark on a private cruise to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves, where thousands of Buddha statues have been stored on the bank of the Mekong River in the side of a limestone cliff. En route to and from, witness typical Laotian villages along the banks, take in an eco-friendly picnic, indulge in a massage treatment, and pause for explorations of Wat Long Khun, Ban Chompet villages, the pottery town of Ban Chan, and the Traditional Art & Ethnology Center. In the evening, head to Hive Bar to attend an Ethnik Fashion Show and do some last-minute souvenir shopping at the Night Market near the National Museum.
Your final day in Luang Prabang takes you to Kuang Si Waterfall via the local Hmong and Khamu villages of Ban Nouane and Ban Thapene. Hike to the top of the waterfall, take a swim in the clear water, and enjoy a sumptuous champagne breakfast at the foot of the falls--a final Lao farewell.
