Explore Peru’s Ancient Mysteries in Modern Luxury

As one of the New Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu has become one of the most popular archeological attractions in Peru and South America. However, there are several lesser-known sites found throughout the country, showcasing the rich history of the Inca and civilizations beyond. Experiential travel in Peru opens your eyes to the mysteries of many ancient sites and Ker & Downey’s Best of Peru luxury travel adventure guides you through the wonders of these hidden gems, abundant in culture and heritage.

Like Titicaca

The fascinating Uros Islands are completely man-made and resemble huge floating rafts made of reeds. Quechua-speaking natives continue to maintain these floating structures as they have since pre-Columbian times, using totora reeds collected from the lake. They call themselves “kot-suña”, or people of the lake, claiming to have “black blood” that makes them immune to the often frigid temperatures. They consider themselves the protectors of the lake and its waters.

Cusco

Just outside the city of Cusco there exist several historic sites. Built by the pre-Incan Killke culture, the walls of Sacsayhuaman are a testament to amazing ancient architecture. The massive stones are placed with such precision that a single sheet of paper will not fit between them. During the era of Spanish colonization, many blocks were removed to construct new buildings – visitors will notice the walls are in pristine condition, but abruptly stop at a certain height. Tambomachay, commonly called the Incan baths, contains a series of canals and waterfalls that once flowed through the terraces and rocky structures. The site is thought to have been an ancient spa resort for the Inca elite. The walls of Puca Pucara are all that remains of this Inca military outpost, which also served as an administrative center. Sunset tints the stone walls a stunning shade of red, earning the site the nickname of “the red fortress.”

The Sacred Valley

Ollantaytambo was constructed just as the Spanish arrived and the distinct pre-Hispanic architectural style of its streets and squares remains. A mountain rises from the modern-day town where numerous pre-Hispanic constructions can be found, including superb temples and terraces. Scholars and archaeologists consider Ollantaytambo to be a living museum: after visiting the ruins of the past, visitors are able to stroll along the avenues of the quaint town of the present. These narrow streets have been inhabited continuously since the time of the Incas.

Though perhaps not as prominent as Machu Picchu, these ancient sites are no less fascinating. Their beauties and mysteries are yours to discover in the capable hands of our South American travel experts. Travel to Botswana’s Okavango Delta with Ker & Downey’s Signature Service

Botswana’s Okavango Delta is quite possibly one of the final remaining pieces of untouched wilderness in the world. A blend of pans, marshlands, reed banks, forests of giant acacia trees and mopane woodlands, the Okavango is arguably the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. It is protected and preserved for the benefit of wildlife and experiential travel and achieves a delightful balance of both. Fed with trillions of gallons of water annually by the Okavango River, the Delta is a playground for Africa’s most recognized animal denizens – The Big Five, wild dog, cheetah, plains zebra, spotted hyena, warthog, dozens of species of antelope and over 400 species of birds.

We are pleased to send our guests to Ker & Downey Botswana camps for unforgettable wildlife encounters in intimate surroundings. Each of the luxury camps is furnished with modern amenities including fully-functional en-suite bathrooms and flush toilets. Hanoi’s Old Quarter is a lively network of narrow streets brimming with activity. From the colorful shops to the food vendors frying fresh snacks, the Old Quarter is an absolute playground for the senses. Lemongrass, coriander, basil and mint are all staple spices of the famous Vietnamese cuisine, while rice and thin rice vermicelli can be found in nearly every dish.

Visitors exploring the Old Quarter will taste handmade pan-fried spring rolls; Bún chả, a bowl of noodles, meats, bean sprouts and greens served with roasted peanuts; Bánh hỏi, tight knots of vermicelli topped with onion and pork; Phở, a beef and noodle soup served with peppers, basil and lime; and a plethora of taste bud-tempting dishes – all easy to eat on the go.

Your hotel in Hanoi, the historic Sofitel Metropole, is mere steps away from the Old Quarter. Consistently rated among the top by TripAdvisor.com users, Sofitel Metropole is “an oasis in Hanoi” within a completely restored 1901 hotel.

Few natural wonders compare to the massive limestone escarpments of Ha Long Bay, and there are few better ways to explore the bay than with a night aboard the Halong Violet luxury wooden junk. This red-sailed vessel houses six private cabins, each with its own balcony, plus exquisite dining on fresh-caught seafood prepared before your eyes by an expert chef.

The ship’s kayaks and bamboo boats offer passage to the isolated islands and beaches of the bay. Paddle away from the ship to explore the narrow caves that lead to hidden shores and reefs where you are free to lounge on the pristine sands and relax in the calm waters of Ha Long Bay. Formed during the Ice Age by glaciation, Vietnamese legend credits a dragon with the creation of the peculiar islands. The bay’s full name translates to “where the dragon descended to the sea” and his thrashing flight carved out the giant karsts that stand today.

The UNESCO World Heritage city of Hoi An is an ancient international port, and the town’s illustrious past is evident in the city’s architecture, which takes cues from Japan, Portugal, France and Spain. The seaside shops of Hoi An are famous for their fine silks and textiles, often used to create brightly-colored lanterns. Visit one of many expert tailors who call the town home for completely custom, made-to-measure clothing and suits. These fine garments are produced often within one day for a fraction of the cost of Western tailored clothing.

The privacy and luxury of your own villa awaits at The Nam Hai, a stunning coastal resort just outside Hoi An. Ker & Downey guests stay in the spacious pool view villas, featuring a full kitchen, private pool and butler services. Floor-to-ceiling windows are found in each room of the villa, offering breathtaking views of the grounds both day and night. The centerpiece of the suite is a raised platform with plush king bed surrounded by an airy canopy of mosquito netting.

Colorful birds create a cacophony in a crisp saltwater lagoon, while nearby giant tortoises silently make a trail through the tall grasses. Miles away, penguins jump from rock to rock, inventing a new kind of hopscotch on prehistoric atolls barely inches above the waves. Still elsewhere, marine iguanas peek over rock formations like mythical sirens, jutting out of the water to sing a song and awaken the adventurer within. These are the Galapagos Islands, the biological darling of the Pacific, and one of the few remaining pristine wildernesses left in the world. It’s hard not to feel like an explorer of old here while uncovering foreign islands and the plethora of endemic species – close to 9,000 if we’re counting – amidst an alien volcanic terrain. At every turn there are new discoveries still waiting to be made, with docile wildlife just as curious about two-legged visitors as we are about them. Unbelievably close encounters with these island natives are a delight both for youngsters and the seasoned jet set who have already ticked Africa’s Big Five off their world species bucket list.

The choice in this diverse archipelago is not so much what to see, but how to see it. Those bound for the Galapagos with Ker & Downey inspect the best of the islands both by land and sea, partaking in the unmatched comfort of lavish tents and splendors aboard an intimate yacht. One of only a handful of luxury tented camps in South America, Galapagos Safari Camp was conceived by a pair of seasoned explorers while sightseeing from a tree branch. Michael and Stephanie Mesdag envisioned a future far from their home in Europe on that fateful perch, inspired by the vistas before them and the potential for a harmonious marrying of aesthetic accommodations and eco-minded tourism. Dreams have been realized here – shared by the likes of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles – with Galapagos Safari Camp emerging as the leader among luxury accommodations in the Galapagos.

With facilities that stand toe-to-toe with tented camps in the Okavango or Kruger, the Galapagos Safari Camp indeed adds a touch of African-chic to this wilderness. Nine elevated tents are comprised of three protective layers of canvas, specifically designed to combat the rain and sun. Climate controls, custom-built beds and writing desks, storage cupboards and en-suite facilities with hot power showers and flush toilets are among the modern amenities. Guests will find warblers, mockingbirds, Galapagos doves and owls amidst the menagerie of birds residing on the farm. Among the highlights of a stay at camp, a chance meeting with visiting tortoises that regularly meander between the tents and through the grounds. A hammock and chairs on the tent’s gracious balcony invites relaxing moments with a front-row seat to the rustic activity, a view duplicated from the infinity pool situated inconspicuously in the brush next to the main lodge…
