Take a Romantic Vacation in Beautiful Mauritius

Mauritius is a small island off the eastern coast of Madagascar. The island’s climate is tropical, mollified by a gentle southeasterly trade wind. First discovered by Arab sailors, the island was once a dense tropical forest. Strangely, though uninhabited, the island was considered uninhabitable by its first discoverers.

The island was re-discovered by the Portugese in 1505 then subsequently held by the Dutch, French and British before its independence. The Dutch inhabited the island in 1598, founding an important port and doing irreversible damage to the indigenous flora and fauna. In 1710 they abandoned the island and 5 years later the French settled it. During this time they also founded the port city of Port Louis which also serves as the capital. For nearly 100 years, the island flourished under French rule. Finally, during the Napoleonic Wars, the British rested the island from the French, holding it until its independence.

By all accounts, Grand Bay is the hub of the island. Both travelers and the local population head to Grand Bay when they seek a fun night out. Recently renovated, the new La Cuvette beach is fantastic. Further, the Balaclava Ruins – named after the many tortoises in the area – stand as a fabulous example of of 17th century European maritime life. On the eastern side of the island, Ile aux Cerfs is a watersports paradise and has one of the most beautiful beaches on this islands. Of course, those seeking a more cost efficient adventure would be well advised to bring their own refreshments as the only bar and restaurant on the beach is for the most discerning travelers.

Oberoi Mauritius is a sprawling luxury hotel spanning 20 acres and featuring over 650 yards of oceanfront beauty. Each villa has its own private swimming pool and luxury pavilion offering panoramic views of the ocean. Marble bathrooms – predominately featuring sunken tubs – overlook private walled gardens for the visitors pleasure. Further, each room features romantic four poster beds with wooden slated ceilings and peaceful neutral colors.

Of note, the Royal Villas offer an entirely different type of opulence from that of the regular luxury variety. Royal Villas are exclusive retreats with unimpeded ocean views. Each one features a private garden with a large pool, dining pavilions and separate areas for dining and reclining.

The restaurant at the Oberoi specializes in European, Oriental and Creole cuisine. Guests dine in the comfortable indoor dining room or the lovely veranda beneath the night sky.

In a review on TripAdvisor a couple reviews the Oberoi Mauritius saying:

It is such a tranquil, beautiful place, the rooms are spacious, clean and modern, the staff were amazing, the food was lovely, the facilities were great and the grounds were large and very well maintained. We never felt crowded.

The service was impeccable and very personal but not obtrusive.

It is a very quiet hotel and that is exactly what we wanted, we were so well looked after by all the staff especially in the restaurant.

Nothing was too much trouble, the chef came out and spoke to us regularly, we had special meals whenever we wanted (with notice of course). The menu rotated every 3/4 days so there was plenty of choice.

We loved the breakfast, the croissants and omelettes have left a lasting impression!
The evening meals were always to a high standard and beautifully cooked.

The restaurant and the bar are beautiful buildings, the height of the ceilings are so impressive. The flowers were lovely and changed regularly.

We loved our stay here and will definitely come back and visit other hotels in the Oberoi family.

We did visit the One and only and found it rather gauche, very busy and not in any way to the standard of the Oberoi.

If you are looking for a peaceful romantic holiday this is the place.

Customized Travel With a Difference: Visit the Old City of Petra

Jordan is a landlocked country bordered by Israel, the West Bank, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Of note, there is no hostility between Muslims and Christians and the country is one of the most modern and liberalized in the region.

Petra, a city in the southern part of the country is known as the fabled “rose red city, half as old as time.” It was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom around the 6th century BC.  As one of the most important centers of trade and commerce, Petra flourished until a catastrophic earthquake destroyed most of the buildings and crippled the city’s water system around 663 AD. When the Egyptian and Syrian sultan Saladin captured the city in 1189, it was abandoned and its memory lost to the west.

It wasn’t until Johann Ludwig Burckhardt infiltrated the city disguised as an Arab scholar that it was rediscovered by the west in 1812. His accounts of the ancient city inspired other Europeans to attempt to visit the city over the next century, the most famous of which – David Roberts, a Scottish artist, drew detailed illustrations of the city to serve as maps for other travelers.

Since then, the city has become Jordan’s most popular tourist attraction, spurred by the exposure from Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones series which prominently featured the city in the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Further, the site was chosen in July 2007 as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

Due to the city’s age, the only acceptable modes of transportation are walking or riding (camel, donkey or horse). Discerning travelers should note that the city is now an archaeological park and thus prices are quite high.

Just an hour south of Petra lies Wadi Rum, a spectacularly scenic desert valley. There are no real towns and the infrastructure here is non-existent, leaving the area nearly untouched except for the couple of thousand Bedouin nomads who traverse the region. There are very few structures apart from Bedouin goat hair tents and a few concrete shops that dot the landscape.

All in all, the region is amazing, a luxurious adventure waiting to happen. A TripAdvisor.com member convincingly describes her once in a lifetime visit to Petra and Wadi Rum saying:

Petra is an amazing, once in a lifetime must-see site.

The entry price is not too bad, but as you really need three days to even scratch the surface it does tot up. We were lucky, having worked for a month on an archaeological project we were granted free entry. I remember thinking I would definitely be happy to pay it so…

If you get the chance…
- Visit over at least two-three days
- see the sun set from the Monastery (one of the highest spots)
- Walk up to the High Place of Sacrifice – the views are phenomenal
- Get lost in the arid expanse of open landscape exploring tombs and temples without seeing another soul.
- Visit the ‘Petra by Night’ display and experience the magnificent sikhs and Treasury lit up by entirely by candle-light(I have seen other equivalents such as at Luxor and Giza in Egypt and they do not compare)
- Stay at the Cleopetra hotel (Rough Guide)
- Treat yourself to an ice-cream at the Movenpick hotel near the entrance.

Travel to Australia and Experience a Luxury Vacation Like No Other

The ‘Red Center’ is a colloquial nickname given to the Southern Desert region that stretches from the Simpson desert to North of Alice. Notably, the Red Center is where you will find Australia’s most famous monolith: Uluru. The only town with any sizable population is Alice Springs, a town founded first by Aborigines then resettled by Australian explorers. The Arrernte Aboriginal people settled in the Central Australian Desert in and around Alice Springs more than 50,000 years ago. Their name for the town is Mparntwe.

The Arrernte country is spotted with mountain ranges, waterholes and gorges. Naturally, the Arrernte people set aside conservation areas where various species are protected. Of further importance, there are many sites of traditional importance in and around the area, including: Emily Gap, Billy Goat Hill, Heavitree Gap, Azac Hill, and Mt. Gillen.

Red Center is most noted for the great many places of interest to discerning adventure travelers. The Uluru, for instance, is the Red Center’s most famous National Park is undoubtedly Australia’s most recognizable natural icon. Rising more than 348 meters high, the monolith has untold cultural importance for the traditional aboriginal owners, the Anangu people.

The Museum of Central Australia is an interpretive center for Central Australia’s natural history. The exhibitions explore the unique features of the region in a typically Australian fashion. Displays show the evolution of of the landscape and creatures that inhabited it; featured is a replica of a local paleontological dig – an ancient waterhole with amazing megafauna including a giant freshwater crocodile and the largest bird that ever lived, Dromornis stirtoni.

The Australian Dreamtime itinerary offered by Ker & Downey runs its way through Red Center in a leisurely fashion. Focusing on luxury and once in a lifetime experiences, the tour was named one of National Geographic’s Top 50 Tours of a Lifetime.

While in Uluru, you will stay at the world famous Longitude 131° tent camp where luxury and spectacular views provide for, quite possibly, the most spectacular accommodations  on earth. A user on TripAdvisor says of Longitude 131°:

We just got back from Ayers Rock, & i must say Longitude 131 is fantastic! It is everything you want and everything you need! First you are welcomed at the airport by a staff member then driven out to the resort, once there you are welcomed into the ‘Dunehouse’, which is somewhat breathtaking. The rock looks amazing no matter what time of the day. The staff are fantastic, they all honestly want to help you with anything you want! Dinner under the stars is such an amazing effort by all the staff! The stars are so bright! After dinner stories of the sky are told around the campfire. Breathtaking. Everything is included, food, wine, tours and of course your ‘tent’! The food is amazing, our chef, Mark Marshall, was fantastic, his passion for food is amazing! Very talented! Remote controls [are] in the bed headboard to raise and lower the shades for a sunset or sunrise view of the Rock. Lots of extras, from warm ponchos (useful for sunrise hikes), robes and slippers, Bose CD player and CDs, flashlights, shoe brushes outside the door. We were met at the end of a sunset hike by staff serving us champagne, cheese and figs – lots of extras like that.We will return, not just for the sight of Ayers Rock, but to see the staff, dine on the food, and drink some lovely Australia & New Zealand wine, Fantastic!

Travel to South Africa for a Unique Travel Experience

South Africa is an elegant and exclusive country located at the southernmost tip of Africa. Ker & Downey services the country via our Elegant South Africa and Splendors of the Cape tour.

The Republic of South Africa is a country located on the southernmost tip of the African continent. Known most recently for the clashes caused by the country’s rigid segregationist system, South Africa has rebounded to become one of the continent’s most developed countries.

In 1487, the colonial explorer Bartolomeu Dias reached the southern tip of Africa, becoming the first European to do so. In 1652, a Dutch explorer established a refreshment station there for ships traveling past the Cape of Good Hope on their way to Africa. In 1795, the British took over Cape Town to use as an interim port for the long voyages merchants took on their way to India. In 1806 they annexed the colony and began to push its borders further east. Over the next 100 years, the British controlled the colony, instilling a rigid caste system separating the colonists from the Dutch whites and the Africans.

When South Africa achieved its independence, the system of segregation, known to the world as apartheid, became far more rigid as the Europeans who chose to stay in Africa flaunted their new-found preeminence. From this period, South Africa’s most recognized citizen, Nelson Mandela rose to prominence. Mandela was a leader of the African National Congress and has received more than 100 awards in his lifetime, including the Nobel Peace Prize. His struggle to free South Africa’s black population brought worldwide attention to the country and the struggle of the native Africans.

Today, Robben Island- where Mandela was held- attracts visitors from around the world. Just off the western coast of the country, Robben Island was used as a prison colony by Europeans for nearly 500 years. Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison on the island, today his prison cell is visited by nearly 1800 people per day.

Of great note, there is a UNESCO World Heritage site called the Cradle of Humankind just northwest of Johannesburg named such for the large number of human fossils found there. South African travel site, SouthAfrica.net describes the Cradle of Humankind saying:

In the province of Gauteng straddling neighbouring North West Province, lies one of the world’s richest depositories of hominid fossils, a treasure trove of clues about our early ancestors. Trapped in a case of dolomite hundreds of years old, these fossils have yielded so much data that the area has been dubbed the Cradle of Humankind, and UNESCO has proclaimed it a World Heritage Site.

A fascinating cast of characters has emerged from the Cradle, all pre-dating modern man.  There’s the grand old dame, Mrs Ples, the skull of a 2 million-year-old Australopithecus africanus, and the 3 million-year-old Little Foot, a near-complete skeleton still under excavation. In 2005 this site was extended to include the Taung Skull Fossil Site in North West province, thereby bringing the Taung Child, another skull thought to have belonged to a three-year-old, into the family.

In suggesting a common ancestry for humanity in this cradle of mankind, South Africa links all nations and suggests an African heritage can be claimed by all.

If you plan on traveling in southern Africa, South Africa is a great place to start. Because it is one of the most stable countries in Africa, those on a travel adventure often find themselves landing in South Africa before voyaging to the rest of the continent. Because of its status as a central destination on the continent, South Africa operates several tourism offices in European, Asian, and North American countries.

Visit Uganda for a Custom Designed Travel Adventure

Uganda is a landlocked country in East-Africa. It shares borders with Kenya on the East, Sudan on the North, the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west, Rwanda on the southwest, and Tanzania on the south. Notably, the southern part of the country is home to a major portion of the Lake Victoria.

The inhabitants of the country were Bantu speaking hunter-gatherers until perhaps 2,300 years ago. Arab traders moved inland into Uganda in the 1830s and their religion quickly spread throughout the country. In 1888, the United Kingdom named the country a ward of the British East Africa Company and it was ruled as a protectorate after 1894. As more territories and chiefdoms were integrated, the final country of Uganda took shape in 1914. The country gained it’s independence from the United Kingdom on October 9th, 1962.

Due to the large number of ethnic groups thrown together in the former colonial territory,  Ugandan culture is remarkably diverse. During the era of British colonialism, settlement by Europeans was not allowed. As such, most of your travel experts will be natives, leading to a more authentic adventure. Of course, this does not mean Uganda is a dangerous destination. Rather, it means there are greater opportunities for delight and of course, frustration. This is a real African country, the smoky urban bustle of Kampala bursts at the seams then gives way to lush subsistence farming and small villages. The roads are rough and gravel-hewn and the people are friendly.

Most travelers to the country come for the gorilla safari, but other major draws include birding, trekking the forest reserves and visiting the Nile’s source at Lake Victoria. Ker & Downey offers a wonderful leisure travel adventure to Uganda via our, Pearl of Africa itinerary. While in the country, adventurers will lodge at the incredibly lush Gorilla Forest Camp in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The Gorilla Forest Camp is a true paradise in Africa. It is a permanent luxury tented camp in the heart of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This exclusive camp is easily one of the best locations from which to participate in exciting gorilla trekking adventures. Furthermore, it offers breathtaking views of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. In a review on TripAdvisor.com, a visitor to the camp states:

Upon arriving at Gorilla Forest Camp we were served drinks and given a refreshing towel as the lodge facilities were explained to us. GFC’s main lodge has a large bar area and dining room that looks out over a large green lawn. You can’t see too much from the main lodge as there is large tree line blocking the view of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. However, this does allow for various monkeys to entertain you by swinging from branch to branch and even climbing onto the roof of the gift shop.

After the orientation, we were shown our room, which was really nice (Weaver room). It had two large beds and a bathroom area attached to the back of the tent. We were a little weary of the lack of mosquito nets in the room though. Being at a high altitude, there’s little to no risk of malaria, but we still aren’t fans of insects in our bed and a bug net or an option to have one would have been nice.

The bathroom at GFC is nice looking, and there was a separate room with a bathtub as well. I can’t say that we felt too relaxed while in the bathroom as it is attached to the tent, but there’s a large gap between the walls and the tents ceiling which made it really easy for a variety of large bugs to fly in while we were brushing our teeth, showering or using the bathroom.

One of the things that GFC has going for it is their food. We were cooked incredible meals and we were also given a choice as to what we would like for dinner, which was nice because we could order different things and share the food. Really good food – you won’t be disappointed.

Luxury for Less: Cape to Cairo

Ker & Downey is world renowned for its bespoke luxury travel adventures. Now, however, we are focusing on creating more affordable itineraries via our “Luxury for Less,” series. Built on the idea of Attainable elegance, the Ker & Downey “Luxury for Less” itineraries offer extraordinary leisure at a reasonable price.

Our Cape To Cairo itinerary begins with your arrival in Cape Town, South Africa where you board at Cape Cadogan: a luxury Victorian farmhouse declared a national monument in 1984. Patterned in soft creams and whites, the fashionable hotel is just a short distance away from Kloof Street, the Times Square of Cape Town. If the luxury hotel life isn’t appealing to you, Cape Cadogan offers 4 luxury apartments, each situated within walking distance of the hotel.

After Cape Town, you will have the option of traveling to the Lion Sand luxury lodges. The Lion Sand lodges are divided into two distinct, yet equally luxurious options: the family friendly River Lodge and the very exclusive Ivory Lodge. For the most discerning traveler Lion Sands also offers the owners private residence to small groups or families. Built in 1933, the home is a massive expression of Victorian grandeur on the South African plains. Each of the owners staff members, and every amenity in the home, is there for your private pleasure.

While at Lion Sands you will also have the journey to undertake a true South African safari. Led by the lodge’s team you will be led on a professional and holistic adventure that few others have the pleasure of enjoying. The Elderhostel, Adventures in Lifelong Learning program gives advice when planning a South-African safari.

After your sojourn in Cape Town, you will fly to Cairo to tour the land of the pharaohs. While there, you will stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at the First Residence where you will enjoy unparalleled service and hospitality. The hotel’s premier location, overlooking the Great Pyramid of Giza and the ancient Zoological and Botanical Gardens, makes it the board of choice for weary travel adventurers.

While in Cairo you will have the opportunity to visit the Khan El Khalili Baazar. Frequently known as the Turkish Baazar, this open-air shopping center was built in 1832 and was central to the Spice Trade of the time. Notably, it was this trade in goods that was responsible for Cairo’s early wealth and forced European explorers to seek to find alternate routes to the Indies to break the Mamluks monopoly.

Luxury for Less: Wonders of the Okavango – Travel to Botswana

Ker & Downey is world renowned for its bespoke luxury travel adventures. Now, however, we are focusing on creating more affordable itineraries via our Luxury for Less series. Built on the idea of attainable elegance, the Ker & Downey, Luxury for Less itineraries offer extraordinary leisure at a reasonable price. Notably, our Wonders of the Okavango itinerary offers luxury travelers the opportunity to experience Botswana for a pittance.

Botswana is one of Africa’s most developed countries. As such, it offers curious travelers a “best of both worlds” scenario in that the country offers travelers the true African safari experience in the context of a developed nation.

On the first day of our, Wonders of the Okavang itinerary, travelers arrive in Maun, Botswana and whisked away to an awaiting light aircraft in which they are then flown across the Okavango Delta. After your aerial tour, you are taken to Kanana Camp, a pristine lodge in the inner reaches of the delta. In a buoyant recommendation on TripAdvisor, a user describes their trip to Botswana (and Kanana Camp) via Ker & Downey saying:

My husband and I have been to Botswana three times, always through Ker & Downey. Great company, everything worked like clockwork, people to meet our flights, etc. The fact that we rebooked with them twice after the initial trip should speak volumes. I don’t know who you’re working with there, but we had Jamie, and she gave us the BEST advice, really figured out “who we are” and what we’d enjoy and was spot-on. She convinced me to include 3 days at their more rustic “Footsteps Across the Delta” camp, and we’re eternally grateful to her for that.

There, we primarily walked, and learned so much about the Delta, the animals, how to track, etc. Not as many animals encountered on foot, but much more intense and thrilling and personal an experience. This camp has been our “common denominator” on all three trips, we just love it! However, if you need en suite flush toilets to feel comfortable, Footsteps isn’t for you!

We’ve stayed at both Shindi Camp and Kanana, both are wonderful. Although Shindi is perhaps a bit more “luxurious”, you won’t feel deprived at either! Even though the game viewing was probably superior at Shindi, it was certainly good at both and we found we prefer the atmosphere at Kanana, hard to explain why and this is a very personal, subjective thing anyhow. Shindi is more “polished” and the main dining/lounge structure is certainly spectacular (built into and around a huge tree, all polished mahogany or teak), but there was something very sweet about Kanana that defies explanation… perhaps it had to do with the staff all gathering at the entrance as our 4-wheel drive pulled up, to sing a welcome song to us.

Also, Kanana is a bit smaller and seems to be less booked up than Shindi — we liked having only 4 to 8 other guests in camp with us, it just felt more congenial and personal. The food was comparable at both (very good). And they both had small pools for cooling off in the “siesta” time of the day, when no game activities are scheduled. Both camps have great water activities (pending time of year) as well as game drives. At Shindi it was possible to opt for a game walk, too.

What other camps are on your itinerary? We’ve stayed at most of the Ker and Downey camps, also some of the other camps that they cooperate with. Will you spend any time at Chobe park?

You will be in good hands with Ker and Downey, and you will fall in love with Botswana. We thought our first trip would be our “once in a lifetime”, and find ourselves being drawn back again and again. (It’s been 2 years since our last trip, and we’re dreaming of returning).

After leaving Kanana Camp, you will head to Moremi Game Reserve where you will stay at the Okuti Camp. Of note, the Moremi Game Reserve is regarded as one of the world’s best locales for photographic expeditions. The reputation has been cultivated by years of diligent care and protection. Further, experienced game drivers accompany every traveler on their forays to ensure that the experience is professional and personal.

Luxury for Less: Whispers of Africa: Luxury in the Bush

Ker & Downey is world renowned for its bespoke luxury travel adventures. Now, however, we are focusing on creating more affordable itineraries via our “Luxury for Less” series. Built on the idea of Attainable elegance, the Ker & Downey, “Luxury for Less,” itineraries offer extraordinary leisure at a reasonable price.

Today we focus on our, Whispers of Africa: Luxury in the Bush, itinerary. You will begin your journey with an overnight stay at #1 Melrose Blvd, a set of luxury apartments located in the heart of Johannesburg. The next morning, you will begin your journey by traveling to the game reserves at Madikwe Hills. Of note, a user from the popular travel website TripAdvisor wrote of his stay at Madikwe Hills saying:

We stayed 3 nights at Madikwe Hills in March this year. On arrival we were surprised to be upgraded to the honeymoon suite, which was magnificent. All accommodation here is of a very high standard. The rooms are huge – each with their own very comfortable lounge / sitting area with a fire, a huge bedroom (ours had a large four poster)looking out on to a private decked terrace with pool, and a large bathroom. Ours was entered via a flight of stairs and at the top was a large tub and a huge shower, all carved out of the rock. There was also an outside bath and shower on the terrace at the back of the bathroom overlooking the plains – very private and deeply romantic.

The two things that stood out about this place were the staff and the food. Both were superb. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, and the rangers and guides were fabulous. This is one of the few lodges in this area of Madikwe where you go out with both a ranger and a tracker, so your chances of sightings are greater. During our stay we saw all but one of the big five and had the most jaw dropping encounters with lions. (It was scary, but then you can’t come back from Africa without at least one near death experience story!) Our guide reliably informed us he had never seen anything like it before. Madikwe is less busy than Kruger, and the different lodges all work together and share information about sightings, increasing your likelihood of seeing what you’ve come to see.

The food at the lodge was fabulous, with all diets catered for – there was just too much of it and it sometimes felt a shame not to be able to eat everything put before you. Dinner was eaten around a communal table on the deck overlooking the water hole – a lovely setting.
On our last night here, we came back from the evening drive to be greeted with a candle lit room, rose petals leading up to our bath, which had been prepared with bubbles and flowers, with a complimentary bottle of champagne and a message ‘Enjoy’. That just sums this place up – 5 star.

On your fifth day, your travel adventure takes you to Djuma Vuyatela, an exclusive and inviting lodge in the Sabi Sand area. In keeping with the African tradition of hospitality,  the term Vuyatela means, “come and visit again” and the lodge features a melting pot of modern South African cultures and design traditions. This is an important theme at Djuma Vuyatela as the lodge is built to reflect the local culture and styles. Most amazingly, if you so choose, after your morning game drive, you can accompany your guide to his nearby Shangaan village, where you will have the opportunity to interact with his family and learn about village life.

After leaving Djuma Vuyatele, adventurers can head to the Timbavati Private Game Reserve where they will lodge at the renowned Kings Camp. Kings camp is a luxury lodge built to give guests the opportunity to take advantage of the African wildlife in an unmistakably genuine fashion. Known for customizing any particular request, Kings Camp offers some of Africa’s rare sights and wonders to the adventurous traveler.
